What We Examine
- →Photos and documents. Checking metadata and file history to establish when and where images and documents were created, and whether they have been altered.
- →Phones and messages. Extraction and analysis of messages, call logs and app data relevant to the claim.
- →Location and timelines. Reconstructing where a device was and what it was doing at the relevant time. See location analysis.
- →Cyber and email compromise claims. Establishing how an account or system was accessed and what was affected. See email & cloud forensics.
- →Expert reports. Findings written for claims decisions and, where required, for court.
Independence
Our findings report what the evidence shows, whichever way it points. That independence is what makes a report useful if a declined claim is later disputed.
Typical Claims
Suspected staged or exaggerated losses, questioned photos of damage, disputed timelines for theft and motor claims, and cyber claims where the policyholder says an account was compromised. We also review digital evidence gathered by the policyholder or another expert when a claim is disputed.
How an Engagement Works
You send the claim details and the material in question. We confirm what can be established and give a written estimate. Devices are imaged forensically so the originals are unchanged, and you receive a report stating what the evidence shows and the limits of what it can show.
Common Questions
Can you tell if a photo of damage has been edited?+
Often, yes. We examine the original file, its metadata and the device it came from. A screenshot or a forwarded copy carries far less information, so ask the policyholder for the original file or the device where possible.
Will the report stand up if the claim goes to court?+
Reports are prepared by a certified examiner and can be written to comply with the expert codes of conduct if the matter proceeds to litigation.
How much does it cost?+
Every matter is scoped first. You get a written estimate based on the number of devices and the volume of data before any work begins.
Background
Every matter is handled personally by Bobby Pabla, an IACIS-certified examiner (CFCE, ICMDE) with 16 years in law enforcement and government investigation, including the New Zealand Police, the NZ Serious Fraud Office and PNG's Independent Commission Against Corruption. He has given expert evidence in criminal, civil, family and insolvency matters.
